Optometry Australia Launches Landmark Study on Workplace Dynamics

Optometry Australia has embarked on a pivotal study aimed at understanding and improving the working conditions of employee optometrists across the country. Titled "Capturing and analysing the working conditions of employee optometrists in Australia," the study is being conducted in collaboration with researchers from Flinders University, UNSW, and practising optometrists.

This initiative comes in response to ongoing conversations within the profession about job satisfaction, workplace culture, and the evolving demands on optometrists in diverse practice settings. By capturing detailed insights into the experiences of employee optometrists, the study seeks to shed light on critical factors influencing retention, professional development, and overall workplace wellbeing.

As the optical industry faces challenges like workforce shortages and increasing patient demands, understanding the needs of employed optometrists is essential for creating supportive and sustainable practice environments. Optometry Australia’s commitment to this research underscores the organisation’s dedication to the wellbeing of its members and the broader profession.

The study will gather data through surveys, interviews, and focus groups, providing a comprehensive view of issues such as workload, management practices, and career progression opportunities. Findings from the research will inform recommendations for employers, policymakers, and industry leaders, fostering a stronger, more resilient optical workforce.

“Optometry is a cornerstone of Australia’s healthcare system, and ensuring that employee optometrists are supported in their roles is vital for the future of the profession,” said a spokesperson from Optometry Australia.

The outcomes of this research are expected to be released later this year, offering valuable insights for practices and optometrists alike.
