Celebrating 50 Years of HOYA in Australia and New Zealand

Sydney, Australia – 24th June 2024

HOYA, a global leader in optical lens manufacturing, proudly commemorates its 50th anniversary in Australia and New Zealand. Since opening its first office in Surry Hills, Sydney, in 1974, HOYA has expanded its footprint across major capitals and into Auckland, New Zealand. This milestone celebrates five decades of innovation, industry disruption, and unwavering commitment to quality.

Revolutionising the Optical Industry

From the outset, HOYA distinguished itself with a unique business model—offering lenses exclusively manufactured and sold by HOYA. This approach was revolutionary in the 1970s when local labs typically ground and coated lenses. By maintaining strict control over the production process, HOYA ensured unparalleled quality, setting a standard that has become industry-wide practice today.

Pioneering Lens Technology

HOYA's legacy of innovation began with the introduction of Multicoat to glass lenses in 1963. This groundbreaking advancement reduced reflective surfaces, setting a new benchmark for lens clarity. The introduction of high-index glass lenses, LHI and THI, further established HOYA as a technological pioneer.

Over the past six decades, HOYA has led the way in lens coating technologies. Key milestones include:

  • 1976: First successful anti-reflective coating on plastic lenses.

  • 1987: Introduction of Hi-Vision 99, offering long-lasting durability and scratch resistance.

  • 2009: Launch of Diamond Finish, doubling the scratch resistance of previous coatings.

  • 2023: Unveiling Hi-Vision Meiryo Diamond, boasting 56% lower reflectance, 5x longer-lasting 'easy-to-clean' features, 2.5x better scratch resistance, and 100% UV protection.

Significant Contributions to Myopia Management

In 2020, HOYA launched MiYOSMART in ANZ, a revolutionary lens featuring hundreds of Defocus Incorporated Micro Lenses (D.I.M.S) in a condensed area in the centre to reduce myopia progression. Initially launched in China & Hong Kong, MiYOSMART has expanded to over 35 countries, with more than 2 million children benefiting globally. This innovation has significantly raised awareness and advanced myopia management worldwide.

Commitment to Sustainability: ONE VISION Initiative

ONE VISION, a sustainability framework focused on creating a connected, conscious, and impactful organisation. The initiative emphasises three pillars:

  1. Environmental Sustainability: Reducing carbon emissions and environmental footprint, exemplified by a 2.7 MWh solar installation at HOYA's main factory in Bangkok.

  2. Community Outreach: Supporting underprivileged communities through partnerships with organisations like Orbis International and Cambodia Vision Foundation.

  3. Workplace Wellbeing: Fostering a healthy, supportive environment for HOYA employees globally.

With ambitious targets of being carbon neutral in operations in 10 years, and utilising 100% renewable by 2040, and 60% by 2030.

Looking Forward

As HOYA celebrates this significant milestone, it remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of optical innovation and sustainability. The company extends heartfelt thanks to its partners, customers, and employees for their unwavering support and commitment.
